Research and Development (R&D) activities promote the generation of knowledge,

innovation, productivity, and technological advancement that ultimately contribute to economic

growth. Hence, a significant correlation is observed between R&D activities and the advancement of

economic growth. Moreover, Research and Development (R&D) plays a crucial role in a country's

National Innovation System (NIS), and R&D statistics serve as highly useful indicators for monitoring

the NIS.

As the National Statistical Organization (NSO), the primary objective of the Bangladesh

Bureau of Statistics (BBS) is to augment the availability of information and knowledge regarding

policy-relevant indicators for researchers, policymakers and all citizens of the country. This is

achieved through the delivery of a wide range of statistical data that aids in the national decisionmaking

process. BBS has conducted this survey, which is the first of its kind in Bangladesh, with the

aim of fulfilling its objective to meet user needs and priorities in the Sustainable Development Goals

(SDGs).
